Grey Beast sketch by NMRosario Grey Beast sketch by NMRosario
Another sketch of Hank in his initial "Grey Beast" form (technically his fur was described as "silver-black" in the comic itself). You might recognize the pose here because I took it directly off of the cover from Amazing Adventures #11 (the issue where Hank first mutated into his furry body). [link]

I actually have some of the background from that cover drawn in as well and I might turn it into another cover remake; but I just wanted to post this part for now. As you might notice this will be a little more faithful to the original source material than my previous cover redo. :)

scrumptious as always... and YESSSSSSSSSSS SO excited to see more of Beast after the transformation! ... it's interesting though, as much as I recognize the character in your style, and the general replication of the source material, he seems less stocky and much leaner here, less apelike. Interesting :)

Thanks! All I can really recommend is life drawing and studying actual human bodies. That's the only way to develop a true understanding of how the body looks and moves.

It's been a while since I've attempted to draw Archangel, so I've been thinking about what I can do with that character. I can't promise that anything will come out of it, but it would be a fun change of pace.

Thank you! :)

Better by far than the original cover. I'd like to see you tackle some of the
Marvel Comics Conan the Barbarian series. I've always admired the work
of illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith. Some updating along these lines would
be most interesting.

Thank you! However, when you're essentially just building off of the layout and composition that another artist has already established, then you can't help but improve on what was done. Plus, I'm not under a deadline here, giving me plenty of time to really refine this one. So, I really don't want to take anything away from Gil Kane (the original cover artist for AA #11), since I think that if he was given the opportunity to redraw this exact cover, with no time limitations, he would be able to significantly improve upon it as well.

I understand all that, but still I like your rendition better.
You build so much character into your Hank, for instance, with
his thick limbs and meaty hands, and masculine, not super-hero
features.

Well, I have you to thank for helping me to "discover" the blue and furry Beast. Of course, I've always been aware of the character, but I never really gave him much of a chance before our early Hank conversations on here. So thanks for that. B-)

Thank you! After the proportional issues I ran into with my previous drawing, I decided that I really wanted to focus on Hank's body proportions and get it right this time.

This is what I like about you...
Not only your image is really good and well done, but you indicate that you took the pose from another drawing, and on top of that, give the link...
There's so many people there who doesn't have this descency...

And I have to say that I prefer your version. Your pose is more dynamic. :-)

Another very good drawing !! :)

Well, I've had people take my work and redraw it without giving any credit before and it's always bugged me. In fact, there is someone on DA right now who has redrawn one of my Beast drawings as his own (is even selling it as a print) and has never once mentioned where the original drawing came from. So I know how it is to have someone steal your ideas and try to personally profit off of them.

Also, when I was in college we learned that there was nothing wrong with borrowing from other artists (artists naturally feed off of each other's inspiration, so it really does more to help you improve than anything else) as long as you gave credit where credit was due.

Anyways, thank you!

Sweet! I like this a lot so far! Can't wait to see what you do with it! I think I have some of the Grey Beast issues of Amazing Adventures in my collection... As a kid, I remember encountering Hank first in the Avengers, probably right after he joined. Thru reprints, I got to see his early X-Men adventures as well. He's been one of my favourite Marvel Comics as well as All-Time characters! I love what you do with him. You really bring him to life!

Thanks! I've managed to collect all 7 issues of Beast's story in Amazing Adventures, plus the continuation of his story in Hulk 161. It's really changed my view of Hank's character and I feel like I never really knew Beast before reading those issues. I actually didn't really care much for Hank's "blue & furry" form prior to that.

I don't think I've read the Hulk story, but I've read most (or all? can't remember) the AA stories. They were good stories, and... they introduced Patsy Walker into the mainstream Marvel Universe as something other than a cameo... teen-humour queen soon becomes heroine once she and Hank head over to The Avengers!

Thank you! Oddly enough, even though human Beast will always be my favorite, I've noticed that drawings of blue & furry Hank just seem to come more naturally to me. Plus, it's an interesting challenge to try figure out how the fur would flow around the muscles in his body. I find myself studying short hair dogs and horses a lot.
